Announcement is Near Fine. The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) was a patriotic military order formed on April 15, 1865 by Union military officers following rumors of a conspiracy to assassinate political leaders in an attempt to overthrow the U.S. federal government. Although the rumors were never proven, there was reason to believe the conspiracy was plausible following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Members of MOLLUS upheld loyalty to the Union and national government and supported the welfare of service members and their families. There were three member classes, "Original Companions of the First Class" (and "Hereditary Companions of the First Class"), "Companions of the Second Class," and "Companions of the Third Class." "Original Companions" were the service members who had fought in the Civil War for the Union Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. "Hereditary Companions of the First Class" were the eldest direct male descendants of deceased Original Companions. "Companions of the Second Class" were the eldest direct male descendants of living Original Companions or Hereditary Companions of the First Class. "Companions of the Third Class" were civilians who gave distinguished service to the Union during the Civil War. Dames of the Loyal Legion of the United States (DOLLUS) was founded in 1899 and accepted as an affiliate society for women in 1915. Members of DOLLUS were related to MOLLUS members either through marriage or familial relations. Today, MOLLUS is solely a hereditary society instead of a functioning military order. "In memoriam" message printed on the back by Brevet-Colonel William C. Albergen[?]: "Carroll Dunham Galvin was born April 7, 1866, in Brookfield, Massachusetts. He was elected a Companion of the Second Class in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States through the Commandery of the State of California, February 9, 1906. Insignia No. 14977. Being the only son of Companion Edward Ilsey Galvin, Chaplain, 42 Massachusetts Infantry. Insignia No. 14204. He spent his early youth in Philadelphia, Penn., and later graduated at the Polytechnic Academy in Worcester, Mass. He was the inventor of the first successful gold dredger in the United States and followed the profession of mining engineer with success in Nevada and California. He was an enthusiast in his chosen profession and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. He married Miss Edna Bartlett in Oakland, July 24, 1901, leaving her surviving him, with a son and daughter. To whom goes the sincere sympathy of his many friends and Companions.".
