Ce dernier fut… nommé auprès de la Cour de Saint-James en novembre 1770, et son impuissance résulta des sympathies françaises acquises aux Insurgents américains. Au même moment, son secrétaire, Tort de la Sonde, lui intenta un procès désagréable à propos d'un trafic de fonds publics dans lequel l'ambassadeur aurait trempé.
