Cover has some wear and soiling. Ruth Salzman Adams (1921-2005) was an arms-control activist and a former longtime editor of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, who devoted most of her life to ensuring that a broad array of scientists and scholars focused on solutions for world peace. Ruth Adams became assistant editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1953 and worked closely with the editor, Eugene Rabinowitch. Adams was an early participant in the Pugwash peace movement, which brought together American and Soviet scientists concerned about the nuclear threat. She was the only woman present in 1957 at the first Pugwash conference in Nova Scotia, sponsored by such eminent scientists as Albert Einstein and Linus Pauling. In the later decades of the Cold War she "frequently had a facilitating role in maintaining the flow of policy-oriented communication and understanding on nuclear issues between senior Western and Soviet scientists". Ruth Adams was a Fellow, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, her edited and co-edited books include works on human migrations, the anti-ballistic missile, and contemporary China. "Collection of papers presented at a series of symposia on the medical consequences of nuclear weapons and nuclear war."--Introduction. Among the participants were Robert Jay Lifton, John Kenneth Galbraith, Herbert Scoville, Kosta Tsipis, Carson Mark, and Joseph Rotblat. Among the topics address are Arms Race, Nuclear Weapons, Radioactive Fallout, Atomic Bomb, Survivors, Burn Casualties, Infection, and Communicable Diseases.

No Binding. Condition: VG. Circa 1900, sized 6 x 9.5 inches, on heavy plate paper, generally very clean and bright. The author, b. Verona, New York, was a politician, Congressman, and dairy and food expert from Wisconsin. He came to Ft. Atkinson with his family in July, 1851. After attending the University of Wisconsin, he assisted his father on the family fruit and dairy farm near Madison. A Republican, he was a member of the state assembly, 1883 - 1885, and was appointed State Superintendent of Public Property in 1889 by Governor Hoard, and state Dairy and Food Commissioner in 1895. It was as head of the latter commission, 1895 - 1902, that Adams earned a national reputation among agricultural leaders. Active in the movement for more effective regulation of pure foods, Adams helped to enact a Wisconsin law providing for strict food standards. He was elected to Congress in 1902 and served from 1903 until his death in 1906. He was influential in the enactment of federal agricultural and pure-food legislation, and also obtained increased appropriations for agricultural experiment stations in 1906, and facilitated passage of the Roosevelt meat inspection bill and pure foods act. He was recording secretary of the Wisconsin Horticultural Society (1886 - 1888) and president of the Wisconsin Dairymen's Association (1887 - 1889). 0.
