Boxman, die behoorde tot de verlichte burgerij, is bijna 40 jaar in het gemeentelijk bestuur werkzaam geweest, eerst als raadslid, later wethouder en tenslotte 12 jaar als burgemeester van Gorinchem. In de dichtbundel vindt men onder meer gedichten over de stoomboot, de heideontginningen in Drente en de Nederlandse nijverheid. In zijn voorwoord verontschuldigt hij zich voor het laten rijmen van ij op ei, volgens velen heiligschennis, maar hij vindt het niet verwerpelijker dan sommige andere rijmen die zijn collega's gebruiken.
