Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the origins of town government in Massachusetts and the development of town-meeting government. The author examines the records of several original Massachusetts towns, including Dorchester, Dedham, Hingham, Weymouth, Boston, and Cambridge. In doing so, the author traces the development of New England town government from its simple origins in English communal systems to the complex and effective form of self-government that it became. The book sheds new light on the evolution of American political institutions and provides a rich understanding of the historical and cultural factors that shaped the development of town-meeting government in Massachusetts. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book contains an index to the first nine volumes of the record of laws passed by the General Court of Massachusetts, also known as the Province Laws. The charter of the Province of Massachusetts Bay dictated that all laws, statutes, and ordinances be transmitted to the Privy Council under the seal of the Province. This excluded the body of legislation except for formally engrossed acts, which in point of numbers, were an inconsiderable portion of the whole. Although thousands of Acts and Resolves passed through the legislature, only a small portion were deemed to be of sufficient import or interest to be engrossed. The great majority were less formal in execution and have been collectively referred to as Resolves. Those not published were known only to the parties directly affected by them. These Resolves, therefore, are an important primary source for research. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
