Il s'attaque principalement à la théorie de la sélection naturelle de Charles Darwin, qu'il juge insuffisante pour expliquer l'origine et la diversité de la vie. Sur le plan philosophique, il s'éloigne d'une vision essentialiste et téléologique du monde, selon laquelle les espèces possèdent une nature fixe et la création est intentionnellement ordonnée. Fort de cette conviction, il rejette l'idée que le hasard et les processus mécaniques suffisent à expliquer la complexité biologique. Aujourd'hui, ce livre revêt surtout une importance historique, témoignant de la résistance intellectuelle et religieuse au darwinisme en France à la fin du XIXe siècle.
