Paperback. Condition: Good. In the years following the American Civil War, many Southern families, their sons and husbands having lost their lives or their health in defense of the confederate cause, also lost their farms and homes. For the entrenched Southern aristocracy, the conversion from a plantation economy based on slave labor to a similar system based on share cropping seemed a logical adaptation. So when a small farm family no longer had the manpower required to make the farm productive, it was usually soon lost to foreclosure and often was bought up by a former plantation owner. This is scenario precisely describes the experience of the family of Henry and Caron Yeatts, a young family that, following the Civil War and the death of Henry, was forced to leave their farm in the fertile Virginia Piedmont to resettle on a borrowed rocky homestead in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In spite of an incredibly difficult beginning, the Yeatts progeny has thrived, maintaining their roots in a mountain community with the name of, believe-it-or-not, Mayberry, Virginia. This book is a collection of vignettes from six generations of a family that has been sustained by hard work, strong faith, and a lively sense of humor.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Education in America and the direction of my own life both changed forever on October 5, 1957. The clock radio in my dormitory room came on with the broadcast of commentator Paul Harvey, awaking us to the news that the Soviet Union had just launched an artificial satellite called Sputnik into orbit around the earth Good morning Americans, he intoned. We awake this fine morning to learn that there is now a tin moon in space, circling the globe and invading the skies above our nation every ninety minutes. This celestial intruder was placed in orbit around the Earth, not by the United States of America, but by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Slaves, dragging their chains, have out distanced free men dragging their feet. Paul Harvey spent the remainder of that Saturday morning broadcast haranguing his radio audience about the sorry state of American education and vilifying lazy American students who eschew the study of science and mathematics. (Does that sound familiar?) He couldn't have been talking to me because I was a math major, but Sputnik was going to have a big impact on my life just the same. Years later, I was still taking great pleasure in telling my students how I owed my scientific education to the Soviet Union and Sputnik. At the time that Russia was launching Sputnik, I was considering dropping out of school for lack of funds and going into military service. But within months, the National Science Foundation was providing me with the funds to remain in school. Eventually, the United States Government would finance my graduate education, as well as the educations of a generation of math and science students, primarily for the purpose of turning us into soldiers in the Cold War.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. There was a general store in this mountain community for thirty years before there was a church or a school. As the only organized institution in the community, it filled many needs. It was the Mayberry Mart - the grocery store, the hardware store, the pharmacy, and the farmers' market. It also served as the social center, the news and information center, and as just about the only source of entertainment in Mayberry. The many amazing personalities that frequented that old store were the source of a lot of traditional mountain lore.…
