Published as part of The Century Travellers series by Century Publishing in association with Gentry Books, the volume carries wraparound cover artwork reproducing nineteenth-century orientalist paintings by John Frederick Lewis. Framing Kinglake's prose is a contemporary introduction contributed by travel author Jonathan Raban, analyzing the stylistic modernity and ironic wit of Kinglake's voice. First issued in 1844 by the London publisher John Ollivier, the work is regarded as a milestone of nineteenth-century British travel literature, and its influence runs through the narrative travel writing of the following century.…
