The authors set out to determine the absolute thermal conductivity of a number of standard concrete mixtures, and also calculated the diffusivity from the specific heat, density, and thermal conductivity. The determinations of thermal conductivity for concrete are part of a larger study of the physical constants of concrete. The experimental work for this investigation was carried out by the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, University of Illinois, in 1920. The determinations of thermal conductivity and diffusivity were made on 51 concrete cylinders, including 3 cylinders of neat cement. Results of the observations and calculations are given for the 51 cylinders. The results are summarized and presented as average values of thermal conductivity and diffusivity for different mixtures of concrete and for white marble, at different temperatures. Unrecorded south London school-boy's home-made magazine: copies numbered 18 - 22 put together during the final peaceful winter of 1914 just months before Britain entered WW1. Edited and printed by A. Carman of 50 Winterbrook, Herne Hill, SE London (Luther Thomas Carman is recorded as the head of the household) with the help of fellow contributors P. Hamer and S Taylor. Vernacular hand stitched binding contains 5 issues dated between January 1914 and June 2014 (April and May combine to form one single issue); each issue bound with illustrated title page, hand written contents page, editorial talk, schoolboy howlers, riddles, sayings, stories, tit bits and hand drawn illustrations; leaves a combination of carbonised and original copies; annotations in pencil, presumably the editor's hand throughout; hand drawn illustrations include 'Mr Morgan at Dinner', 'Mr Cook at Dinner' and 'Cartoon' [of Mr Moggy's head]. The subjects may all be school masters. c40pp. No other copies can be located making this a unique piece of Edwardian era social history. PHYSICAL CONDITION:Homespun card boards very good, titled 'The Monthly Review' in black ink over a white pasted label to upper.
