This book records the history of the Awatere County Council's territory, situated at the extreme north east tip of the South Island, with a long sea boundry, extending inland in a rather narrow strip and taking its name from the Awatere River, running from the inland extremity to the sea near the main town of Seddon. In his foreword Alister McIntosh aptly sums up the book by saying it was ". just the type of local history that people appreciate and want --- a faithful record of the origins of settlement, of the individual runs and their owners, exploration, pioneering, and breaking up the big estates and closer settlement at the beginning of the century and the progress of community life." The author, who focuses on all these and other elments of the Awatere, was the son of Awatere pioneers, who farmed all his life in the district and who, according to the foreword had from "word of mouth" absorbed the history of the early days and remembered it. The story of the Awatere is presented in 16 sections dealing with all the factors mentioned in the foreword and many more --- readers would find it difficult to point to any aspect in the life and times of the county and its people that he had overlooked. An excellent example of the local history genre. First edition, published by the Marlborough County Council, not dated but circa 1978, the date on the author's preface, 238 pages including four appendices, bibliography, references and index, about 80 b/w illustrations, mainly photos, including portraits, with some art, one map in text block, four unpaginated maps at back, plus e/paper maps.Orange hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions.
