Hardcover: H 24.5cm x L 15.75cm. Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 15.5cm. Original muted purple cloth well rubbed; spine sunned but with gilt stamped lettering and tree vignette still reasonably bright; bumping and wear at spine ends and board corners. Pale blue bookplate "Masonic Circulating Library. | Red Land Lodge, No. 3. | San Augustine, Texas. | No. 104" affixed at front pastedown's top left; an online citation notes that the Masonic Institute of San Augustine was an educational institution offering separate education for boys and girls and operated by Red Land Lodge No. 3 from September 1851 until 1861. Some foxing and toning with scattered stains and fingerprint soiling; rear free endpaper has detached top fore-edge corner which is now laid-in. Frontispiece retains toned tissue guard sheet. Several quires/leaves slightly pulled but binding is firm. Laid-in at front endpapers is a tintype portrait image of woman but with no note as to identity; book was acquired among a group of books that had antiquarian ink inscriptions of a J.D. Thomas, Jr. of San Augustine so perhaps the woman is a relation. Approx. shipping weight = 2.75 pounds. {Antiq-Shelf#1}.…

WITH REMARKS ON RURAL ARCHITECTURE. FOURTH EDITION, ENLARGED, REVISED, AND NEWLY ILLUSTRATED. (Spine title: Landscape Gardening and Rural Architecture.") Paged as i-xiv, 17-532. Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 15.5cm. Original blueish-green cloth rubbed with soiling and staining; board corners bumped and worn; shallow chipping/wear at spine ends; slender 4.5cm surface chip at upper front joint/spine affecting some title lettering; small surface chip at spine center; spine's gilt lettering and gilt tree vignette dulled/flaked but all still easily discernable. Antiquarian ink inscription "James McCallum - 1859" on front free endpaper's upper center; old ink blot at frontispiece's fore-edge margin affecting preceding flyleaf and successive tissue guard and title page; a few creased page corners; foxing/toning strongest on book's unpaged b/w plates and their adjacent leaves. Binding is firm. Provenance from a multi-generational collection of books acquired from a Tupelo, Mississippi estate with the family having Pulaski, Tennessee roots. Thus the book's aforementioned ownership signature allows for a firm attribution to James M. McCallum (1806-1889), an early Giles County, Tennessee attorney, state legislator, and author. McCallum served as Clerk and Master of the Giles County Chancery Court from 1842-1861 thereafter representing Giles County in the Tennessee General Assembly from 1861-1863 and representing Tennessee in the Confederate Congress from 1864-1865.
