First Edition
First Edition. First edition, 8vo, pp. xii, [4], 127, [1]; map, frontispiece and 8 illustrations from photographs, tables in the text; fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. Also published the same year in wrappers by the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. "The first ethnological study - based on extra ordinarily intimate knowledge gained in the field - of the Marri Baluch, a nomadic and mixed farming tribe of West Pakistan. This uniquely detailed analysis of local communities in a nomadic population presents an unusually complete and reliable picture of the interrelated social organization, and economic and cultural factors affecting the structure of the communities and the families they comprise. Because the fieldwork was undertaken jointly by a husband-wife team, the data give an especially full and accurate picture of kinship and domestic life from the dual (and often conflicting) points of view of Marri men and women . Professor Pehrson, a brilliant young anthropologist, died in the field while studying the Marri tribe. Fredrik Barth, who is Professor of Social Anthropology in the University of Bergen, Norway, has authoritatively edited Pehrson's notes after completing his own field work" (jacket blurb).

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
From the library of Nathaniel Tarn (born Edward Michael Mendelson), poet and anthropologist whose Arctic research intersected with University of Chicago ethnographic traditions. The Reindeer Breeding Peoples by Robert N. Pehrson, Department of Anthropology, University of Chicago, expanded from a pair of lectures delivered in November 1950 (Anthropology 230a). An extremely scarce internal lecture handout from one of America's leading Arctic ethnologists. Pehrson's outline surveys the ecological, cultural, and social structures of reindeer-herding societies across Siberia, the Arctic, and northern Scandinavia - including Lapps, Samoyed, Yakut, Yukaghir, Tungus, and Chukchee groups. Includes sections on domestication, herding, social organization, religious practice, and the cultural symbolism of the reindeer among circumpolar peoples. Likely distributed only to graduate students at the University of Chicago's Department of Anthropology, then under the leadership of Fred Eggan and Robert Redfield. A significant example of early postwar Arctic ethnography, pre-dating Pehrson's later publications. Author: Robert N. Pehrson Publisher: University of Chicago, Department of Anthropology (internal mimeograph) Year: 1950 Special attributes: Unpublished lecture manuscript; mimeographed academic document; early Arctic ethnography Topic: Reindeer herding, circumpolar cultures, Siberian peoples, anthropology of domestication Subject: Arctic studies, ethnography, University of Chicago anthropology Keywords: Pehrson, reindeer breeding, Arctic ethnology, Samoyed, Yakut, Tungus, Lapps, 1950, anthropology lectures, mimeograph, Chicago school of anthropology Condition: Very Good. Faint toning to first leaf, staples lightly rusted, text crisp and fully legible. Scarce academic mimeograph; strong interest among Arctic anthropology and Chicago School collectors.
