L'Amùr qui è molto largo, al mare restavano soltanto 27 verste1; il posto è maestoso e bello, ma i ricordi del passato di questa regione, quello che i compagni di viaggi…o dicono sul duro inverno e sulle non meno dure usanze locali, la vicinanza dei lavori forzati e l'aspetto stesso della città abbandonata, spopolata fanno passare del tutto la voglia di ammirare il paesaggio.Nikolàevsk è stata fondata non poi da tanto, nel 1850, dal famoso Gennàdij Nevel¿skój, momento radioso più unico che raro della storia della città. Negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta, quando si è cominciato lo sfruttamento agricolo del territorio lungo l'Amùr facendo generoso uso di soldati, detenuti e coloni, a Nikolàevsk facevano soggiorno i funzionari che governavano la regione, qui arrivavano numerosi avventurieri russi e stranieri, si trasferivano i coloni attirati dalla straordinaria abbondanza di pesce e di selvaggina e, evidentemente, gli interessi che si confanno al genere umano non erano estranei alla città, tant'è vero che uno scienziato di passaggio considerò necessario e possibile tenere una conferenza pubblica al club.
