DAVIDSON, JOANNA. Sacred rice: an ethnography of identity, environment, and development in rural West Africa. New York: Oxford University Press, 2016, 2d printing number line ending in 2, xiii, 249pp., . Series: Issues of globalization Sacred Rice explores the cultural intricacies through which Jola farmers in West Africa are responding to their environmental and economic conditions given the centrality of a crop - rice - that is the lynchpin for their economic, social, religious, and political worlds. Based on more than ten years of author Joanna Davidson's ethnographic and historical research on rural Guinea-Bissau, this book looks at the relationship among people, plants, and identity as it explores how a society comes to define itself through the production, consumption, and reverence of rice. It is a narrative profoundly tied to a particular place, but it is also a story of encounters with outsiders who often mediate or meddle in the rice enterprise. Although the focal point is a remote area of West Africa, the book illuminates the more universal nexus of identity, environment, and development, especially in an era when many people--rural and urban - are confronting environmental changes that challenge their livelihoods and lifestyles. - CONTENTS: Introduction: sacred rice -- A rice complex -- Ampa Badji & Nho Keboral -- "We work hard" -- Cultivating knowledge -- Of rice and men -- Transgressive segregation revisited -- Jopai, and the limits of legibility -- Conclusions: structural uncertainty. paperback. Condition: Good. DETAILS: PAPERBACK, a few pages dog-eared, small ink line in margins on a few pages, otherwise still very good used copy. TAUBES, SUSAN. Lament for Julia: and other stories. Introduction by Francesca Wade. New York: New York Review of Books, 2023, 1st printing number line ending with 1, xii, 226pp., . Series: New York Review Books classics "Susan Taubes (1928-1969), born Judit Zsuzsanna Feldmann in Budapest, was the daughter of a psychoanalyst and the granddaughter of a rabbi. She and her father emigrated to the United States in 1939, settling in Rochester, New York. She attended Bryn Mawr as an undergraduate, and in 1949 married the rabbinically trained scholar Jacob Taubes. Taubes studied philosophy and religion in Jerusalem, at the Sorbonne, and at Radcliffe, where she wrote her dissertation on Simone Weil. She and her husband had a son and a daughter, in 1953 and 1957, and in 1960 she began teaching at Columbia University, where she was curator of the Bush Collection of Religion and Culture. During the 1960s, Taubes was a member of the experimental Open Theater ensemble; edited volumes of Native American and African folktales; published a dozen short stories; and wrote two novels, Divorcing and the still-unpublished Lament for Julia. Her suicide came shortly after the publication of Divorcing, in November 1969. Two collections of Taubes's extensive correspondence with Jacob while they lived apart in the early 1950s were published in Germany in 2014: the letters appear in their original English with German annotation" - CONTENTS: Lament for Julia -- The patient -- The sharks -- A fatal disease -- Dr. Rombach's daughter -- Medea -- Easter visit -- The gold chain -- Swan -- The last dance.
