Includes stories collected and in a number of cases, also translated, with notes by the editor. FitzReimund, Philip St. L. is the pseudonym of Philip Redmond (dates unknown), author of a few stories published in tur…n of the century British magazines, such as The Pibroch of the Cat of Ben Mhor, and The Barnacloch Branch. The Preface states: "This Book consists of a collection of Tales, of a supernatural character for the most part, selected from mediaeval sources, with a view to the illustration of that most interesting subject -- Mediaeval Folk-Lore. Many of the Tales have been translated from the Latin or Old French. For these translations, except where it is otherwise stated, the Compiler is responsible, as well as for the Notes". All sources are carefully cited. The fascicles are numbered on the back of the stapled parcel. Not all stories listed in the contents are present. The Contents arranges the stories by subject matter, with the name of the tale and source of the tale: STORIES OF NECROMANCY; DEMONS & EVIL BEINGS: HOUSE SPIRITS; FAIRIES ETC.; and MISCELLANEOUS. 43 of the 45 tales listed in the contents are present, most with notes by the compiler. The only stories missing are "Vampire Stories I", and "The Fiend of Kempten". All texts and notes are handwritten in an exquisitely clear hand, possibly publishable without transcription -- to add flavor. A few pages are darkened or smudged, the whole tied with an old indigo grosgrain ribbon. Circa 1900-1910. Unpublished manuscript. Interested persons please inquire for full list of tales and sources. Section map in partial hand color on a piece of oilskin, 15.25 x 35.5", folded to 12ths for storage. _____ We have been unable to find any information on the company, but we suspect it is from the first quarter of the 20th century._____ The holdings are in the bend of the Yakima River between Benton…and Richland._____ The Yakima and Columbia are shown in blue, the sections owned in yellow, red and brown._____ Shades vary, presumably as land was acquired._____ Also shown in blue is a proposed irrigation canal from the Yakima at Prosser into the holdings. _____ The existing routes of the Northern Pacific Irrigation canal and the Oregon & Washington RR through the farm are indicated and the Northern Pacific RR is shown across the southern margin._____ On the northern side of this Yakima bend today is the Hanford nuclear site._____ The left and right edges are curled, not affecting the copy._____.

Seneca Canning Factory along the line of the Pennsylvania Railroad. At the top are a key to the map as well as important statistical figures related to Talbot County, such as population of key towns and infrastructure and fire department facts. Photos slightly waved and faded, one with a minor crease on the corner, one photogravure with a small repaired tear; overall a very good collection of interesting photos. Interesting collection of thirteen early, well-preserved original albumen studio photos of Gibraltar and Spain in the late 19th century. Five views of Gibraltar include three images of the Rock (east side looking north with British barracks in the centre, Signal Hill battery, the summit taken from the sea), Europa Point battery and the Eastern enclosure of the Moorish Castle. Four views of Cadiz, with the credentials of Jose E. Puig, show Plaza de San Juan de Dios, Plaza de Toros, Plaza de Abastos (Central Market), and a general view of the city from Torre Tavira looking towards the sea. An interesting image with the ink stamp of Rafael Rocafull y Monfort on the verso shows a public park in the nearby town of El Puerto de Santa Maria. An unsigned photo is an attractive view of "strada principale di Porto S. Maria (Cadice)." There is also a view of a port with several boats in a dock, piles of logs and local workers, most likely, in Spain. The smallest photo portrays a young Spanish torero (bullfighter) wearing a traditional traje de luces outfit and a montera hat. The collection also includes nine photogravures (six by Madrid studio of Oscar Hauser Muller and Adolfo Menet Kurstiner), showing Barcelona (Paceo de Colon, La Rambla, Columbus Monument, fountain in the Parc de la Ciutadella, general view of the port), port city of Vigo (Calle del Principe, general views of the harbour and waterfront, featuring ships of the "squadron d'istruzione italiano") and Montserrat Monastery in Catalonia.

Twenty-two photos by the studio of Zangaki Brothers show Cairo (Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque, Citadel and nearby Arab village, the Nile at Bulaq, a street view), Aswan (the Nile and railway tracks with various machinery), Pyramids of Giza (general views with Mena House hotel, the Nile and palm groves or a small dam, a close-up view of the Great Pyramid), Philae Temple (general views taken from the north, Temple of Hathor), Karnak Temple (Great Hypostyle Hall), the First Cataract at Aswan, three views of the "Olga" dahabiya boat on the Nile (Swedish flag is visible, two locations are captioned - the Elephantine Island and Aswan), &c. Two images by the Greek photographer Pappa Peridis depict the panoramic view of Cairo and the alley of destroyed sphinxes leading to the Pylon of Ptolemy III at the Karnak Temple. Other photographs include two views of the Philae Island and Temple - before and after it was flooded by the construction of the Aswan Low Dam in 1902 (the second image by Marquis & Fiorillo shows the scale of inundation by the raised level of the Nile), Cataract Hotel in Aswan (built in 1899) and a scene of an official celebration in a town on the river bank - most likely, Aswan (with visible flags of Great Britain and the Sultanate of Egypt). "The Zangaki brothers were born on the island of Milos. It is not known where they learned photography but soon after their arrival in Egypt, they became established photographers. The Greek brothers' photographs are very commonly found in tourists' albums assembled in the Middle East in the latter part of the 19th century. From their Port Said studio, they were in an ideal position to sell to those on the Grand Tour" (Jacobson, K. Odalisques & Arabesques: Orientalist Photography, 1839-1925. London, 2007, p. 277). Luigi Fiorillo worked in Alexandria in the 1870s-1890s. Pappa Peridis was active in Port Said and Cairo in the 1880s-1900s, being apparently associated with the Zangaki Brothers.

Period navy blue sheep album with gilt-tooled borders and spine; all edges gilt; decorative endpapers. Spine and edges slightly rubbed; mounts mildly waved and age-toned; but overall a very good album with interesting photos. A well-preserved collection of 93 amateur and studio photographs of cities and archaeological sites in Greece, Turkey and Algeria. The majority of the collection consists of studio photographs; twelve snapshots are likely taken by the compiler. Over 15 photographs show Greece, with most attributed to the Rhomaïdès Brothers. One is a panorama showing the city of Nafplio. The others show archeological sites in Athens (Acropolis, Temple of Hephaestus, the Roman Angora, and Hadrian's Library) and Mycenae (the Acropolis of Mycenae and Lion Gate). Over 15 photographs show Turkey, including Smyrna's (Izmir) customs wharf, the waterfront, Turkish Quarter, and a caravansary full of travellers. The amateur photographs show ruins in Ephesus (a Roman basilica and amphitheatre) and Colossae near Honaz. Over 30 photographs are of Algeria, signed in negative by Alexandre Leroux. They include views of Algiers, showing the bustling Port of Algiers, the Place de Gouvernement (now Place des Martyrs), the Summer Palace (now the People's Palace), "Bresson Place" and "Bresson Square," and the "Cathedrale et Palais du Gouverneur; there are interiors of the National Library of Algeria, the Jardin d'essai du Hamma, and Djamaa el-Kebir (Great Mosque of Algiers); and images of daily life, including students learning at an "Arab school," a "Moorish café," and street scenes. Also of Algeria are photographs of Roman ruins in Timgad and Lambaesis, the village and nearby gorge of Kamtara, and mosques and the old Turkish Fort in Biskra. Several photographs are portraits of Algerians, including women in "Moorish public attire," an Algerian officer, and a young shoe-shiner. Additionally, over 20 photographs are views of Monte Carlo and Nice. The photographs of Nice are signed in negative by the Neurdien Brothers. Overall, a well-preserved collection of large photographs showing Algeria, Greece, and Turkey in the late 19th/early 20th century.

Rare attractive keepsake album of sixty early carte-de-visite photographs of Egypt, taken by several local businesses, including a noted Cairo studio of Wilhelm Hammerschmidt and an early Cairo partnership of Louis Royer and Clovis Aufière (fl. ca. 1860s). Invented in the middle 1850s, photograph portraits and views in the format of "carte-de-visite" (ca. 85x55 mm) gained popularity in the 1860s and became objects of collecting, especially photos of celebrities and famous sites around the world. Most photos in the album (ca. 50) are portraits of Egyptians and scenes from their life (water carriers, musicians, "Bedouins from Giza," camel, oxen and donkey riders, sellers of oranges or sugar canes, elders, beggars, barber and his client, a "tobacco cutter," women with water jugs, smoking hookah, posing in traditional clothing, with covered faces, Nubian women, mothers with children, &c.). Two photos after paintings portray Ismail Pasha, the Khedive of Egypt and ruler of Sudan (1863-1879) and "Vice-roi d'Egypt" - apparently, Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt (March-November, 1848). The other photos are views of Cairo (the Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque, Mosque of Qani-Bay and other examples of Mamluk architecture, "houses in Copts in Cairo"), Suez Canal, Pompey's Pillar in Alexandria, a dahabiya on the Nile, &c. Overall a beautiful album with well-preserved early carte-de-visite photographs of Egypt. Hammerschmidt]. "Born in Berlin, Wilhelm Hammerschmidt was already a professional photographer when he settled in Cairo, Egypt, around 1860. There he established the Hammerschmidt shop, where he sold photographic materials to other early photographers such as Henry Cammas. Hammerschmidt exhibited ten views of Egypt at the Société Française de Photographie in 1861 before becoming a member the following year. He also made costume and ethnographic studies, exhibiting those at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867. Hammerschmidt also made photographs in Syria and Nubia, now Sudan" (Wilhelm Hammerschmidt / Getty Museum Collection; see more ). Hammerschmidt is considered one of the first photographers to produce high quality detailed images of Egypt and his travels and photographs of Upper Egypt and Nubia predate popular tourism in Egypt. He appears to have collaborated with the pioneering photo chemist Hermann Wilhelm Vogel (1834-1898), which would explain the high quality of Hammerschmidt's photographs. Ermé Désiré opened his photo studio in Cairo in ca. 1864 and became known for the series of views of the construction of the Suez Canal and numerous photos of Cairo, produced on the assignment of Ismail Pasha, the Khedive of Egypt. He also took classical ethnographic portraits of local people, from beggars and street sellers to Egyptian dignitaries and officers of the Khedivial army. "Royer and Aufière had a partnership in Cairo probably during the early 1860s. The work of this pair is rare and identified photographs have consisted mostly of carte-de-visite portraits of native types taken in the studio, some of which are beautifully composed.
