A sensational divorce case where Frank Dalton accused his wife, Helen of adultery. There were allegations of a sexual relationship by Helen and her lover, William Sumner (cousin of Senator Charles Sumner) and accusations of negligence and adultery leveled against Dalton by his wife Helen. Frank Dalton was so enraged that he ended up beating William Sumner to death. After a protracted trial, he was found guilty of assault and battery, rather than manslaughter which was expected. He is grateful to her for 'guessing that I should be interested in this work of yours after having plied my scalpel upon your novel "The Sword of Love".' He regrets that 'for many a long year' he has 'done no general reviewing outside the publisher's office. There the flood of MSS. that poured in furnished effectual occupation. The thickness of the trees in one's own spinney precluded much survey of the whole wood.' The recipient is best known for her 'Hugh Collier' series of detective novels.
