This work was reprinted from the scarce 1839 account of Zenas Leonard's firsthand description of the Joseph Reddeford Walker expedition to California. Zenas Leonard (1809-1857) was an American frontiersman, explorer, and fur trapper. Leonard joined a fur-trading expedition in 1831 that took him across the Rocky Mountains, where he spent several years trapping, trading, and living among Native American tribes. His detailed journal offers one of the earliest firsthand accounts of life in the American West, describing encounters with tribes such as the Crow, Blackfeet, and Nez Perce, as well as the hardships of overland travel, survival, and hunting.

This work is complete, with 23 engraved aquatint plates, three maps (two folding). From Sabin: "One of the most valuable of modern voyages, containing a most interesting visit to Pitcairn Island, the coast of California, etc." This work by Captain Frederick William Beechey is the published account of HMS Blossom's expedition (1825-1828), undertaken to support British Arctic exploration and to attempt contact with overland parties searching for a Northwest Passage, Beechey surveyed the Pacific coast of North America, the Bering Strait, and the Alaskan littoral, producing important hydrographic observations, coastal charts, and ethnographic notes on Indigenous communities encountered along the way. He also made contact with John Adams, the last survivor of the Bounty mutiny on Pitcairn Island.

Publisher's original paper wraps, title on front cover. Bound at spine with string. This work was published by request of the American Whig - Cliosophic Societies of Princeton University. (Sabin 18320) This work is signed on the front cover: "from Mr. Dallas / 28 Nov. 1831." George M. Dallas (1792-1864) served as the 11th Vice President of the United States from 1845 to 1849 under President James K. Polk. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1810 and subsequently studied law. Dallas entered politics early, serving as the private secretary to Albert Gallatin, a former Treasury Secretary, and then embarked on a diplomatic career, including posts in Russia and Great Britain. Domestically, he served as the Mayor of Philadelphia (1828-1829), the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (1829-1831), and as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania (1831-1833). Dallas was also the 11th Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1833-1835). Dallas sought the White House in 1848, but after taking some controversial tie-breaking votes on tariffs while President of the Senate, he had very little popular support. Signed.
