Pp. iv, 576. 18 engraved plates, including 12 hand-coloured plates of costume. Marginal dampstaining to upper corner of several leaves, including 2 plates, major staining to 1 coloured plate, occasional light foxing and offsetting from plates. Second title: Anecdotes of the Manners and Customs of London during the Eighteenth Century. Pp. iv, 490, 8 (index). 50 engraved plates, including 12 hand-coloured plates of costume. Noticeable foxing to uncoloured plates, Both titles bound uniformly in contemporary diced calf, with double gilt rules and single blind roll, recently rebacked, with blind-tooled ornaments and gilt rules between raised bands, corners restored, marbled endpapers and edges. Armorial bookplates of George Harrison and Felix Carbray to both volumes, but overall, an exceptionally nice set.

Bookplate of Sir Hew Dalrymple Hamilton, North Berwick & Bargany; title with ownership a different signature [Henry Collins?], 1817. Very good copy. First issued in 1808. A book full of anecdotes â" lots of them, clearly historical (17th century tales are easily found in the mix). He also issued a 3-volume work with a similar title, the content being a different period: Anecdotes of the manners and customs of London During the Eighteenth Century, (1810) in 2 vols. The author-compiler, was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. PROVENANCE: Seems likely: Sir Hew Dalrymple-Hamilton, 4th Baronet (1774 23 February 1834) was a Scottish politician.
