Desde 1953 a 1981 fue titular de la Cátedra Alfonso XIII de esa misma Universidad. Después de 1982 ha sido Visiting Professor en varias universidades norteamericanas. Es académico de la British Academy, socio de la Royal Historical Society y académico correspondiente de la Real Academia de Buenas Letras de Barcelona y de la Academia Portuguesa de la Historia. Fue galardonado con el primer Premio Nebrija por la Universidad de Salamanca en 1989 y nombrado ese mismo año Comendador de la Orden de Isabel la Católica.
