Hardcover. Condition: New. Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Persian. [14], 184 p. Guzide-e asrâr-nâmâ. Attar was a twelfth-century Persian poet, theoretician of Sufism, and hagiographer from Nishapur who had an immense and lasting influence on Persian poetry and Sufism. Manṭiq-uṭ-Ṭayr [The Conference of the Birds] an…d Ilāhī-Nāma [The Book of Divine] are among his most famous works. "Asrar-nama" is the earliest of Attar's mystical narrative poems ; it has attracted less scholarly attention than the other three. This may be partly due to its lack of a frame-story. The contents are arranged in 22 discourses (maqālas) in random order, without regard to sequence of ideas. Each maqāla begins with an outline of an idea, which is then developed by means of short anecdotes. Frequently the anecdotes are accompanied by reflections which lead into thematically related fields or, in some cases, stray quite far from the basic idea. The work thus lacks a definite conceptual structure. Its concluding message is the hope of release of man's spiritual substance from the world's grasp. In no other work does ʿAṭṭār propound the gnostic concept of the soul's fall and the duty to free it from worldly and material bonds so comprehensively and forcefully as in the Asrār-nāma. The resultant belief that this work influenced the preamble of the Maṯnawī-e ma'nawī, probably gave rise to the legend that the aged ʿAṭṭār donated it to the young Jalāl-al-dīn Rūmī as his testament. The concluding message naturally leads the author into moralizing reflections of the world's transience, vanity, and depravity, which fill whole chapters in the last third of the work (chap. 14 onward). After the three introductory chapters on tawḥīd, na't, and manāqeb, the fundamentals of the gnostic concept are expounded; certain aspects are elaborated in chapters 8 and 11, and in chapter 5 the favorite theme of reason and love (aql o ešq) is introduced. Chapter 12 also seems worthy of special mention, because it is about the impenetrability of celestial and extramundane secrets (asrār) and is thus more pertinent to the book's title than the rest. Nineteenth century rebacking with raised blind bands, gilt title on morocco label on two., [colophon: ?In Sole aureo, uici Diui Jacobi Par=//rhisiensis.terminatum est hoc solenne Decreta=//lium volu…men Per magistrum Bertholdum Rembolt. . anno Domini millesimo quingentesimo decimo, die vero XIII. augusti. As trained lawyer, Pope Gregory edited and systematised the numerous compilations of early legal pronouncements or decisions, codifying them, while excising portions, or ?Exravagantes? , thereby creating the 1234 Decretalium or Decretals. The work was published by Pope Bonifacius vii. In the present legal example, the Decretals are accompanied by flanking commentaries by Bernardus Bottoniensis and Johannes Andreas; the work also includes Dr. Lodovico Bolognini?s legal tables. This body of canonical law would form the basis of canon law until, in 1917, the law was further elaborated. Posterity would remember Pope Gregory for his Decretales, Papal Inquisition, ultimately with devastating long-term effects on Europe, and his call for the Crusade of 1239 to retake Jerusalem. In 1233 Gregory IX would institute the Papal Inquisition to bring order and to deal with heresy, appointing papal inquisitors - Inquisitores haereticae pravitati ? in 1231. A consequence of the Decretals would become the suppression of followers of Judaism. The doctrine of servitus camerae imperialis, or servitude immediately subject to the Emperor's authority, promulgated by Frederick II directly proceeded from and built on the Decretals. The prevention of Jews to participate in the political life of Christian states continued well into the 19th century. Other population would experience similar suppression or persecution, either directly by popes, or indirectly their emperors or vassal [s kings]., Size : Folio (385x254mm), Text in Latin. Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original decorative dark brown full leather bdg. 44 p. Printed on a special paper with an early 18th century watermark. The Advice by Attâr includes 901 couplet in Persian. Attar Persian poet, Sufi, theoretician of mysticism, and hagiographer, born ca. 540/1145-46 at Nīšāpūr, and died…there in 618/1221. His name was Abû Ḥâmed Moḥammad b. Abî Bakr Ebrâhîm or, according to Ebn al-Fowatî, b. Sa'd b. Yûsof. ʿAttâr and Farîd-al-dîn were his pen-names. It seems that 'Attâr was not well known as a poet in his own lifetime, except at Nīsâpûr. 'Awfî, who traveled widely, may have heard about him while staying there , or perhaps from Majd-al-dîn Bagdâdî if this Majd-al-dîn was their common Sufi mentor, though Awfî appears to have only known about Attâr's lyric poetry. Farid al-din 'Attar is one of the most famous spiritual poets of Persia. His works were the inspiration of Rumi and many other mystical poets. 'Attar, along with Sana'i were two of the greatest influences on Rumi in his Sufi views. Rumi has mentioned both of them with the highest esteem several times in his poetry. Rumi praises 'Attar as follows: "Attar roamed the seven cities of love. we are still just in one alley." 'Attar reached an age of well over 80 and died a violent death in the massacre which the Mongols inflicted on Nishapour in April 1221. The world depicted in 'Attar's works reflects the whole evolution of the Sufi movement. The starting point is the idea that the body-bound soul's awaited release and return to its source in the other world can be experienced during the present life in mystic union attainable through inward purification. In explaining his thoughts, 'Attar uses material not only from specifically Sufi sources but also from older ascetic legacies. Apart from his two famous epic masnavi poems 'The Conference of the Birds' and 'The Book of God' he composed a Divan full of powerful, enlightened ghazals and ruba'is. The Pand-nama is a small book of wise, moral advice in short poems in rhyming couplets that is practical and spiritual. (Encyclopedia Iranica & Pand-nama : (Book of Wisdom) Selections Introduction).
