The article collection comprises nine sociolinguistic case-studies on a variety of topics such as linguistic landscapes, family language policy, language in education, language contacts, multilingual internet communication, language ideologies and practices, language maintenance and language shift. The studies address a range of significant questions. What are Russian-speaking teachers' strategies when teaching their subjects in Estonian? What is behind the decision of Russian-speaking parents to send their children to Latvian-medium school? How some public signs in Latvia become a controversial issue? How linguistic landscapes can be used in foreign language pedagogy? What are similarities and differences in language use of two Latvian-Estonian bilinguals? What happens in Estonian-English-Japanese trilingual communication on Facebook? What does a comparison between Tallinn and Vilnius linguistic landscape tells us? Whether and how Lithuanians in the UK and Norway maintain Lithuania? Do siblings from the same Lithuanian family in Australia have a similar command of Lithuanian? Kogumik koosneb üheksast sotsiolingvistilistilisest juhtumiuuringust, mille teemadeks on keelemaastikud, perekonnakeele põhimõtted, keel hariduses, keelekontaktid, mitmekeelne suhtlus internetis, keeleideoloogiad, keele säilitamine ja -vahetus. Milliseid strateegiaid kasutavad eesti keeles õpetavad venekeelsed õpetajad? Millise tagamõttega panevad venekeelsed lapsevanemad oma lapsed läti õppekeelega kooli? Miks on mõned avalikud sildid Lätis muutunud tüliõunaks? Kuidas saab keelemaastikke kasutada võõrkeeleõpetuses? Mille poolest erineb kahe läti-eesti kakskeelse isiku keelekasutus? Mis toimub eesti-inglise-jaapani kolmekeelses suhtluses Facebookis? Mida annab Tallinna ja Vilniuse keelemaastiku võrdlus? Kas ja kuidas säilitavad leedulased Ühendkuningriigis ja Norras leedu keelt? Kas Austraalias elava leedu perest pärit õe ja venna leedu keele oskus on samal tasemel? 9789985588987.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Language Policy beyond the State invites readers to (re-)consider the ways language policy is constituted, taken up, and researched if we look within and past the state. Contributors to this edited volume draw attention to language policy as always in the making, focusing on agency, on-the-ground practices, and ideologies. The chapters of the book reveal how simultaneous, and at times contradicting, language policies exist within a state and explore the complex roles played by families, businesses, educational institutions, and media in generating and appropriating these policies. By moving away from language policy analysis concerned primarily with how official state policies address well-defined language problems, some of the contributions of the volume highlight how the problems themselves can be ideological artifacts or are discursively constructed in language ideological debates that are provoked by changes in the geopolitical situation in the region. Using qualitative and descriptive research, the book uses Estonia as a setting to examine the ways historic and contemporary populations navigate language policies in both local and transnational spaces. As a whole, the collection speaks eloquently and powerfully to current efforts to understand and map the ways multiple institutions and individuals-not just the state-play an active role in forming and taking up language policies.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Revoicing Intangible Cultural Heritage draws upon an original, wide-ranging dataset to show that the dynamics and ethics of participation in European national minority cultures intangible cultural heritage (ICH) are more nuanced than has previously been articulated.Arguing for an approach to analysing ICH that reflects societal change in regions that are historically those of national minorities, contributions to the volume focus on three regions across four countries. This allows for comparative exploration of exemplar contexts that span a range of circumstances in which European national minority cultures thrive and strive for voice and recognition. It explores how a wide range of people engage with national minorities ICH and seeks a better understanding of the ethical and practical dimensions of this participation. It proposes a heritage literate revoicing of ICH: to create socially positive pathways to resilient ICH, and in turn ensure ICH is an arena where these positive social relations are shaped as part of an evolving ecosystem into the future.Revoicing Intangible Cultural Heritage takes an interdisciplinary approach ideally placed to interrogate the interplay of different groups with ICH from multiple perspectives. This makes the book essential reading for academics and students working in heritage studies, sociolinguistics, cultural and event studies, sociology, creative practice, and cultural geography. The Open Access version of this book, available at , has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.
