Being a lifelong church musician, BDR started by singing in the children’s choirs of his childhood church, and progressed through the programs as he aged. He took piano lessons, and participated in the music band & vocal programs of the local school system. As a boy pianist, he received an enormous level of encouragement from the church of his youth.
College was a six year stint of acquiring an AAS degree in electronics, and a BA degree from a small College nearby to his home, majoring in both Business Management and Music - piano performance. During his time there, he engaged in instrumental and choral ensembles throughout, including the community, advanced and auditioned vocal groups. During this time he also toured with a local singing group that presented weekend concerts at churches in the region.
While at College he met and ultimately married a classmate in the music department. She is an ABLE pianist, and has pursued a profession as a band teacher. They have often worked alongside each other in their church involvements.
After College BDR was immediately hired as the music director at a large church in the area, and launched - along with his wife - on a 40+ year journey of serving in church music - across multiple programs and cities as leaders, directors, facilitators and participants.
He now brings 50+ years of experience to thinking and writing about church music. His passion is for the singing church! And, building the musical communities that make that possible.
