Written to address the role of women in "the hurried and perplexing present" (preface, p. vii), the work presents an essentialist adjunct to discourses concerning equality within the women's movement at the turn of the 20th century. Moody (1860-1928) was a prominent journalist of the American Gilded Age, dubbed by contemporaries as "the cleverest newspaper woman in New York" for her "Woman About Town" column in the New York Evening Sun (quote from The Idaho Statesman, 21 July 1894). She was also an editorial writer for a range of national publications including Scribner's Magazine and Harper's Bazaar, and was the first female editor of McClure's Magazine. In The Unquiet Sex, Moody positions herself against aspirations of equality between men and women. She considers the move in America towards equality to be a "phase", decrying the "unhappy sex-consciousness which has wrought too much mischief" (p. 95). Her thoughts on the "intrinsic" qualities of men and women, and the according division in societal roles, are relevant to critical discussions of gender essentialism. Moody particularly takes aim at "the woman collegian" and female higher learning, asking instead "Why not educate a woman for her life-work?", that is to say, "the noble profession of housewifery" (p. 15).
