Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 39 pages. Rather than a simple peace accord, Brest-Litovsk was a draconian dictation that dismantled the western borderlands of the former Russian Empire. It provides the clearest historical blueprint of Germany's Ostpolitik (Eastern Policy) during the First World War—a vision rooted in territorial expansion, economic exploitation, and the creation of puppet satellite states. 1. Germany's Strategic Objectives in the East Germany's eastern policy during World War I was driven by a mix of military necessity and imperial ambition: • The "Bread Peace" and Economic Exploitation: Germany and Austria-Hungary were suffering severely under the Allied naval blockade. Securing the agricultural surplus of Ukraine (the "breadbasket of Europe") and the oil fields of the Caucasus was vital to keeping the Central Powers fed and fueled. • Mitteleuropa Plan: The German foreign policy establishment aimed to build a massive economic and political sphere of influence across Central and Eastern Europe (Mitteleuropa), completely dominated by Berlin. • Eliminating the Two-Front War: By knocking Russia out of the conflict, the German General Staff intended to transfer dozens of military divisions to the Western Front to launch a decisive, war-winning offensive before American forces arrived in large numbers. 2. The Negotiation Dynamics Negotiations began in December 1917 at the German military headquarters in Brest-Litovsk. The Soviet delegation, initially led by Leon Trotsky, utilized delaying tactics under the formula of "neither peace nor war". Trotsky hoped that workers in Germany and Austria would launch their own socialist revolutions, making imperial treaties irrelevant. Amused but eventually frustrated by these delays, Germany broke the armistice in February 1918 by launching Operation Faustschlag (Fist Puck). Meeting virtually no resistance from a dissolved Russian army, German forces advanced rapidly into the Baltics, Belarus, and Ukraine. Realizing the survival of the Bolshevik regime was at stake, Vladimir Lenin overrode his internal opposition and ordered the immediate signing of the treaty, accepting whatever terms the Germans dictated. 3. The Devastating Terms for Russia The treaty stripped Russia of roughly 1.3 million square miles of territory and fundamentally altered the demographics and economy of the state: Metric Lost Impact on the Russian Empire Population ~34% (roughly 55 million people) Agricultural Land ~34% (including prime farming regions) Industrial Infrastructure 54% of its industrial plants and factories Coal & Iron Reserves 89% of its coalfields Financial Reparations 6 billion German gold marks (added in August 1918) Russia was forced to renounce all claims to Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Belarus. Additionally, territories in the Caucasus (such as Kars and Batum) were ceded to the Ottoman Empire. 4. Implementation of the German Eastern Policy Following the signing, Germany rapidly moved to organize its new eastern empire: • Satellite States: Germany recognized the independence of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Baltic states, installing pro-German client governments or planning puppet monarchies ruled by German princelings. • Military Occupation: Instead of fully freeing up manpower for the West, Germany was forced to leave nearly one million soldiers in the East to garrison the vast new territories, enforce grain requisitions in Ukraine, and suppress local resistance. This watered down the strategic advantage they hoped to gain on the Western Front. (SL#117/2)(SL#84/2).…
