Major-General Ian Stanley Ord Playfair served on the Western Front during the First World War, and during the Second World War was the Director of War Plans until 1942 when he joined the general staff in South East Asia. However, the volume concludes optimistically with the successful campaign against Italy in Ethiopia, in which General Orde Wingate's irregular Gideon Force plays a prominent part.
