Ley lines have been the subject of heated debate between ley hunters and archaeologists ever since their discovery by Alfred Watkins in the 1920s. In the 75 years since their discovery they have been atttributed mystical meaning, been associated with prehistoric travellers, UFOs, invisible earth energies, ghosts, marauding spirits, shamans, madmen and the feet of angels. Many attempts have been made to understand and explain the extraordinary phenomenon of dead straight lines of prehistoric monuments, such as stone circles and standing stones, ancient and forgotten churches, wind-swept hill tops and stretches of antique trackways. Not until now has it been possible to look back over the years of research, speculation and theorising to paint a coherent picture of the colourful history of ley hunting and to come close to an understanding of the phenomenon.
