Synopsis
"Statistics for the Engineering and Computer Sciences", Third Edition, retains the philosophy of previous editions and presents basic concepts in a context of heavy application. The text is flexible, however, so that instructors who prefer to teach a great deal of theory can do so. Easy-to-understand instructions on using the computer for calculations enable instructor and student to concentrate on the meaning of the numbers, as would an engineer on the job. The text contains computer applications with easy instructions on how to use statistical software (SAS, SPSS, BMDP, and Minitab). It also includes numerous applied exercises based on real data from newspapers, magazines and engineering journals, as well as calculus-based theoretical exercises that require greater mathematical skill for their solution. Real data sets, included in an appendix, enable the instructor to motivate and explain basic statistical concepts using real scientific data.
