Undated, but circa 1976. Single card sheets, folded, one with a conventional printed greeting, "best wishes for Christmas and the New Year", and inscribed by the actor, "to you all from Joan and Robert Morley Fairmans Wargrave", the other with the printed greeting, "MERRY CHRISTMAS from Joan and Robert Morley", and inscribed "love" before the "from", and "RECENT ENGAGEMENTS INCLUDE BLUE BIRD"; the first card with a design (by Robert Jordan) of a partridge in a pear tree, the second bearing a real photograph, 164 x 177mm, of Robert Morley as Father Time (solemn, long-bearded, carrying an hour-glass) in George Cukor's 1976 film The Blue Bird - his fellow stars included Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda and Ava Gardner. Robert Morley (1908-1992) married in 1940 Joan Buckmaster, daughter of Dame Gladys Cooper; the unnamed recipient of their cards was Lord David Cecil (and family). Morley's path crossed repeatedly with that of the first Goldsmiths' Professor of English Literature at Oxford: in 1958 they appeared together, with John Betjeman, on Gilbert Harding's programme Who Said That?; in 1964 Morley addressed the Royal Society of Arts on "The Lost Art of Conversation" - with David Cecil in the chair; twice in 1965-6 Cecil was on Morley's team for the programme Call My Bluff; and in 1967 Cecil's son Jonathan appeared in Peter Ustinov's play Halfway Up the Tree, with Morley starring and John Gielgud directing.
