About this Item
Wrappers. Covers very mildly creased, some slight wear at head of backstrip. Inscribed by the author on the half-title, "pour Jonathan Griffin en bien amical souvenir. Pierre Jean Jouve 1949"; loosely inserted a printed ticket for a Kathleen Ferrier concert at the Salle Gaveau, 8 November 1949. Later in the collection of Jouve's friend the poet David Gascoyne, with the Gascoyne library book-label. Jonathan Griffin was "one of the masters in the renaissance of poetry translation over the last 20 years" (Anthony Rudolf, Independent obituary). His competitor as a translator of Jouve was David Gascoyne, whose first translations of Jouve appeared in 1939; his ambition to produce an English edition was not realised in his lifetime, but achieved by his industrious editor Roger Scott in Pierre Jean Jouve, Despair Has Wings: selected poems . . . translated by David Gascoyne (2007). Gascoyne described Jouve as the "poet I still regard as the greatest it has been my good fortune to know": "In the autumn of 1937," he wrote in his introduction to his own Selected Poems, "my discovery of a copy of the 1930 edition of Pierre Jean Jouve's Poèmes de la Folie de Hölderlin in a book-dealer's box on the Paris quays marked a turning-point in my approach to poetry.".
