About this Item
Spine slightly faded, some spotting of endpapers. Author's presentation inscription, "Dorothy & Herbert from Roy with love July 1944." The author's third book: poems mostly inspired by his war service with the Royal Navy in Africa. "During the war [Fuller] served as a radar mechanic in East Africa and then as a radio and radar officer at the Admiralty in London, experiences commemorated in his first books: Poems (London, 1939), The Middle of a War (London, 1942), and A Lost Season (London, 1944). Auden's powerful influence is visible throughout, but is gradually subsumed into Fuller's own flexible voice. 'The Middle of a War' and 'During a Bombardment by V-Weapons' are minor classics, expertly condensing all the mixed, unheroic emotions induced by war, and distinguishing between 'ridiculous detonations' and 'the permanent and real / Furies . . . settling in upstairs'" (William Scammell, The Oxford Companion to Twentieth-Century Poetry in English).
