About this Item
Pen-and-ink drawing with pencilled caption, 109 x 69mm (whole sheet 191 x 138mm), with pencil mark-up notes and stamped on verso "D.M. [i.e. Daily Mail] 20 SEP 1958". Grand lady, dressed up, necklaced and ready to go, stands in doorway watching her half-dressed husband, in shirt, socks and suspenders, brushing the scant hair on his bald head: she to him, "Well there's one pair of legs Matt Busby isn't going to pay £45,000 for." On 19 September 1958 it was announced that, seven months after the Munich Air Disaster in which eight of his players died, the manager of Manchester United was paying a record transfer fee of £45,000 for Sheffield Wednesday's "Golden Boy", the inside forward Albert Quixall (1933-2020).
