A fair to good copy of the first edition in a contemporary cloth binding with 12 hand coloured plates and 3 black and white illustrations by the author. An interesting work with a memorable account of daily life in La Trappe (which included a diet of a piece of bread, 2 carrots and some cabbage as a daily food ration). The dark green cobbled cloth binding has gilt titles and ruled lines to the spine. It is clean and sound. All the corners are bumped, particularly the bottom corner of the back board. The boards have slight fading towards the top. The spine has pulled ends with a little fraying and there is a small (3 cm) split in the cloth at the top of the front spine joint. There is a small dark mark towards the top of the back board. Internally there is the pencil signature of Eleanor Harper on the front pastedown endpaper, and a bookplate of Henry Ingram with an armorial lion tipped in between the free endpaper and the initial blank. Contents: frontispiece, title, plate list, preface, contents pp xii; text with 11 hand coloured plates, a vignette and 2 plain plates as called for (apart from the plate listed at 83 which is the frontispiece) pp 1-188. The paper is toned with some foxing and browning particularly in both text and plate margins. The page edges are untrimmed and the bottom page edges (pages differ in size) are generally browned and spotty. Pages xii-3 have a large brown stain at the bottom edge and pages 71-74 have browning to the side edge at the top. The plates are clean and well coloured. The blue paint has run slightly at the top edge of the frontispiece where a couple of streaks extend into the margin. Bottom page corners are rippled from p 115 onwards and there is a repaired side edge tear to p 43/4. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
