A personal friend of Robert Burns, she married the younger brother of Burn's patron, with Burns attending many events held at their home. Burns wrote several love songs for her, and in 1794 made a drunken overture that resulted in their quarrelling for a time. He paid tribute to her as 'a votary of the Muses'.Riddell's anthology contains many examples of her own poetry, along with anonymously authored works, and contributions from poets including Lord Palmerston, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, and Mary Darwall.Retaining the original half title. Rebacked, in the publisher's original paper covered boards, retaining the original endpapers. Significant losses to paper at fore edge of rear board, with marks to front board.
