First edition, second state, with corrected page number 258 to volume two rather than 852, large paper copy. Two small octavo volumes. 253pp + 3pp ads; 280pp + 5pp ads. Portrait frontispiece to volume one, facsimile signature frontispiece to volume two. Bound in contemporary tooled calf, stamped in gilt to spines, four raised bands, marbled textblock edges and endleaves, titled buckram dust wrappers. Housed in matching buckram and leather divided slipcase. . Darkened to leather and wrapper spines; light rubbing and soiling to boards; foxed and creased to prelims; slight wrinkling to pages; wrappers and slipcase rubbed and soiled. Very good. TCM-457. Hardcover. Condition: Good Minus. **NON MATCHING PAIR** This item is offered as one copy of Volume One and one copy of Volume Two. They are not a matching pair. Volume One: Brown half leather boards with gilt lettering to spine. (7.5in x 4.5in) Marbled front board is detached from spine. Both boards are rubbed. Corners are bumped. Wear to edges. Spine has bumping to top and bottom, shelfwear. Spine has 4 raised bands. Decorative endpages. Textblock is in good condition, clean and tight. 253 pp. + adverts. Volume Two: Brown leather boards with gilt lettering to front and spine. Boards are marked and generally grubby (6.5in x 4in). Corners are bumped. Spine is coming away from front board at ends. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Full calf original brown bindings with decorative gilt tooling to the edges of the front covers and to the spines of both matching volumes. Condition: Very Good plus: no splitting to the bindings, clean end papers, spotting to the frontispieces; very neat gift dedication dated January 20th 1826 from Eliza Iredale to the top edges of the title pages of both volumes; generally very clean and tight text blocks with almost no spotting or sunning. Poet Laureate Robert Southey wrote in his introduction to the first volume: "Many lives of Nelson have been written; one is yet wanting, clear and concise enough to become a manual for the young sailor, which he may carry about with him, till he has treasured up the example in his memory and his heart. In attempting such as work, I shall write the eulogy of our hero, for the best eulogy of Nelson is the faithful history of his actions: the best history that which shall relate them most perspicuously". Boards show edge wear and scuffing/rubbing. Corners and spine ends lightly frayed. Previous owner's name on first paste down. Endpapers, frontis and title pages noticeably foxed.
