Spine faded, otherwise a nice copy. Joseph Lister (1827-1912), the pioneer of antiseptic surgery, came to Edinburgh in 1853 and married the daughter of his professor, James Syme. From 1860 he was Professor of Surgery at Glasgow, and then from 1869 Professor of Clinical Surgery at Edinburgh, before returning south to England as Professor of Surgery at King's College, London. Contributors to this memorial volume include Sir George T. Beatson, Professor John Fraser, Alexander Miles and Professor Sir Edward Sharpey-Schafer, among many others. "I must confess that highly, and very highly, as I esteem the honours which have been conferred upon me," said Lord Lister on receiving the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh in 1898, "I regard all worldly distinctions as nothing in comparison with the hope that I may have been the means of reducing in some degree the sum of human misery.".
