Add to basketNoyes, Alfred. The Hidden Player. New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1924. First U.S. edition. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-294 [295-296: blank]. Original navy blue cloth, front panel stamped in gold and ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold. A bit of rubbing to gold stamping on spine, a nearly fine copy in a very good decorative dust jacket with a few shallow edge chips, a nice copy overall. Rather scarce now in jacket. #3107. $225. "Eleven short stories, many written with vivid imagery and composed with considerable originality." -- Locke, Spectrum of Fantasy, vol. III, p. 62. In "Checkmate" the hero plays against an invisible opponent, with tragic results. "The Immortal" concerns a cactus plant that confers longevity for 300 years, with a seed that may be planted and thus allow another similar term of life. "The Very Careful Man" is about a disease in the brain of a taxi driver (described as microbial warfare) whose subsequently erratic behaviour upsets the precautions of a safety-obsessed Londoner. "Bill's Phantasm" is a ghost story of sorts, with a satirical nod towards the Society for Psychical Research. The first story, "The Troglodyte," though not technically fantastic, is steeped in weird atmosphere, and its climactic recognition scene redeems its sentimental mysticism. Noyes was best known for his narrative poetry, though he also published fiction, drama and other material including a post-catastrophe science-fiction novel, The Last Man (U.S. title: No Other Man). Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1244.
