An important book by the man who, among many other things, coined the word 'eugenics'. This is the first ever study into the hereditary nature or otherwise of intelligence. This copy appears to have had its endpaper's replaced at some point and the front hinge is just starting. The cloth at the top and bottom of the spine is frayed. Some foxing to the page edges and to the first few and last few pages. Most of the interior is bright and clean. Size: Octavo . Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating realm of hereditary genius, exploring the extent to which natural ability is passed down through generations. The author embarks on a statistical journey, examining the family histories of illustrious individuals across various fields, including judges, statesmen, commanders, literary figures, scientists, poets, musicians, and painters. Through meticulous research and analysis, the author seeks to establish a connection between exceptional talent and lineage. Grounded in the scientific understanding of the time, the book challenges the prevailing notion of the human mind as independent of natural laws. It presents a framework for understanding the distribution of mental faculties within a population, drawing upon the mathematical concept known as the law of frequency of error. The author's findings suggest that while social and environmental factors undoubtedly play a role in shaping individual achievements, the inheritance of innate abilities significantly influences the potential for exceptional talent. Beyond the central question of hereditary genius, the book ventures into broader discussions on race, the factors that impact a nation's intellectual capacity, and the potential for guiding the evolution of human capabilities. The author contemplates the implications of selective breeding and the possibility of shaping future generations through informed choices. Ultimately, this book invites readers to consider the profound influence of heredity on human potential and the responsibility each generation holds in shaping the intellectual landscape of the future.
