In August 1914 Gunther Plüschow (1886-1931) was sent to China; he had an extraordinary war, crashing his plane fleeing from the Japanese, escaping on foot and making his way across the US, but was stopped by the British in Gibraltar and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp at Donington Hall, in Leicestershire. Astonishingly, two months later, in July 1915, he escaped. The papers issued confident reports - "The Chinese dragon tattooed on his left arm while on service in the East should . . . betray his identity" - but, with a tenacity evident in a very readable narrative, he escaped on a steamer to the Netherlands.
