Covers are moderately handled, scuffed, scratched and some there is some staining at the rear cover. Edges of pages discoloured. Spine is thumbed and showing wear. Some creasing at the edges. Original Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Second impression from November 1954. Originally published by Elek earlier in the same month. Boards have slight bumping to the top and bottom of the spine. Page edges are lightly browned. There is brown stripe to inner edge of both the front and rear free endpapers. Previous owners name to the half title page and a gift message to the previous owner on the title page. Pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. Jacket has some edge wear and light chipping to the spine. There are one inch closed tears to both the top corners of the front panel. There is an half inch closed tear to the bottom edge of the front panel with a little associated creasing. There is some discolouration to the spine and to the rear panel and flaps. Some edge wear, chipping, and short closed tears to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed with small loss, some slight browning to spine and back jacket, back cover slightly damp cocked, not price clipped (18s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and almost square, overall a vg copy for its age. 255pp, map endpapers. The amazing career and adventures of Mike Mitchell-Hedges (1882-1959), adventurer, traveler, fabulist, and writer. Mitchell-Hedges is principally known for the discovery of the Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull which he supposedly found with his adopted daughter Anna Mitchell-Hedges (Le Guillon) in Lubaantun, Belize. However, he made no record of the skull until the late 1940s which was around the same time a crystal skull was auctioned off by Sydney Burney at Sotheby's in 1943. Controversies continued when identical measurements were found between Sotheby's skull and Mitchell-Hedges' skull, leaving the authenticity of this artifact questionable at best. Mitchell-Hedges' crystal skull was retained in the possession of his adopted daughter until her death in 2007. Prior to her death, the skull was only shown to the public periodically, making it hard for the skull to be accessed and tested for authenticity. However, since Anna's death the skull has been examined thoroughly and despite many previous claims, the skull has been dated as post Columbus era. Based on microscopic evidence, the skull's tool markings are a result of modern equipment and not of tools found in ancient Maya sites. Mitchell-Hedges is said to have inspired the film character Indiana Jones. A very scarce book with jacket. Seller Inventory # 010034
