Item description from seller

Folio, pp. [iv], 23, [1] advertisement; cut a little close at the foredge, but with no loss; in modern paper boards. Second edition of this classic poem, perhaps the only memorable verse to emerge from the tidal wave of verse to engulf the Duke of Marlborough when news of his victory at Blenheim became known. Addison's Campaign was to become standard mental furniture of the eighteenth-century anglophone mind, and is arguably the most significant and oft-quoted military poem of the century. The first edition was published in late 1704, with a title page dated 1705; it was an instant success. This second edition is not a reissue from standing type: there are some minor changes, such as corrections of the spelling of Britannia (from 'Brittania', p. 3). The real changes, however, occurred in the very scarce third edition, also of 1705, when a dozen or more lines were significantly rewritten. Foxon A29; Horn, Marlborough, a survey, 72.
