Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Reprint of 1962. Text/NEW w/margin discoloration. Softcover/VG w/light edge & surface wear. Gift inscription to title page. First published in 1938; this is a 1962 reprint. Murder thriller set in pre-War 1930s Brighton. It marks journalist Charles "Fred" Hale's second assignment to Brighton. Previously he had come and exposed a gang controlled slot machine racket which was published in the Daily Messenger (see Greene's previous novel Gun for Sale, 1936 for particulars). Heir to the gang is Pinkie, a teenage sociopath yet to fully prove himself. Both in Brighton, blood spills --- "Brighton Rock" is sweet traditionally sold at English seaside resorts, and here a metaphor for the murder weapon. Enter other protagonists: amateur sleuth Ida driven by a keen sense social justice, and, innocent waitress Rose, Pinkie's new bride who, unknowingly, holds the ace card in the complex, brilliant alibi Pinkie has set up. All this leads to a chain of fresh crimes. In this exciting underworld thriller, Greene pits Roman Catholic doctrines of sin and of morality --- Pinkie and Rose are Catholics (as was Greene) --- against Ida's non-religious moral sensibilities. So, novel is also one of sin and redemption, devine and social justice. Seller Inventory # 018918
