Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Good. [Lucas, E. V. and Charles L. Graves]. Wisdom while you wait : being a foretaste of the glories of the 'Inside completuar Britanniaware'. . . 40th thousand. London: Isbister & Co., 1903. Paperback, Good. Illustrated red card covers, faded and dusty to edges with patchy color fading to reverse. Binding… firm. Stapled into the ffep (the staples now rusty) an order form for the special edition of the book available at 5 shillings. Frontispiece b/w illustration. 96pp. including mock advertisements at the end; b/w illustrations. Slight colour leakage from the red covers onto the edges of the last few pages, otherwise contents clean and bright. This satire is a humorous and exaggerated marketing pamphlet for a fictional encyclopedic publication, referred to as the Insidecompletuar Britanniaware. Its topic revolves around the absurdity of the encyclopedic genre and the commercialization of knowledge during a time when reference works were becoming increasingly popular. The content of the book consists of a series of playful testimonials, quirky advertisements, and mock essays that elaborate on the benefits of owning the encyclopedic set. It includes comedic claims about the various uses of the volumesranging from serving as ballast for ships to providing excellent insulation against earthquakes. The whimsical and farcical tone of the writing showcases a variety of subjects and contributors, satirizing the nature of journalism, literature, and the commercialization of intellectual pursuits in a lively and entertaining manner. Through its humorous exaggeration, "Wisdom while you wait" critiques the consumerist culture surrounding education and knowledge dissemination in the early 20th century. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions. All images are of the actual book for sale - no stock images are ever used. Thank you for looking at this listing.
