The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. There is some beginning bumping and rubbing to the spine ends and corners. The spine of the book has some spots… of fading. All ten color illustrations are included, and have the accompanying tissue guards. The text pages are clean and bright. "The stories depicted the "Auld Lichts", a strict religious sect to which his grandfather had once belonged. Modern literary criticism of these early works has been unfavourable, tending to disparage them as sentimental and nostalgic depictions of a parochial Scotland, far from the realities of the industrialised nineteenth century, seen as characteristic of what became known as the Kailyard School. Despite, or perhaps because of, this, they were popular enough at the time to establish Barrie as a successful writer. Following that success, he published Better Dead (1888) privately and at his own expense, but it failed to sell. His two "Tommy" novels, Sentimental Tommy (1896) and Tommy and Grizel (1900) , were about a boy and young man who clings to childish fantasy, with an unhappy ending. The English novelist George Gissing read the former in November 1896 and wrote that he "thoroughly dislike[d it]". " (from Wikipedia). Illustrated by A. C. Michael (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Dj. 1st American Edition. a near fine copy in the original brown gilt buckram cloth with hand tipped on color plates by the artist A. C. Michael. Author: Jamers or J. M. Barrie. (1914,HC). Illust by A. C. Michael. Publ by Charles Scribners Sons, New York. The creator of Peter Pan revisits his…ancestral village in this 1889 work. Again he draws upon his mother's stories about a small-town in Scotland said to be Barrie's home town of Kirriemuir. A Window in Thrums is one of Barrie's most poignant novels. The story of the "untrue son - of it he wrote: "It is a sadder book to me than it can ever be to anyone else.". Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (9 May 1860 - 19 June 1937) was a Scottish author and dramatist, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. The child of a family of small-town weavers, he was educated in Scotland. He moved to London, where he developed a career as a novelist and playwright. There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired him in writing about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (included in The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a "fairy play" about this ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. This play quickly overshadowed his previous work and although he continued to write successfully, it became his best-known work, credited with popularising the name Wendy, which was very uncommon previously. Barrie unofficially adopted the Davies boys following the deaths of their parents. Arthur C Michael was famous for illustration of H. Rider Haggard and flourished between 1903 and 1916 he is little known today, but is work is superb and colorful and quite imaginative. Arthur C. Michael (illustrator).
