Cloth, large 8vo, 31 cm, 21 pp,78 plates (some tipped-in, some colour). From the introduction - " The art of Steer may be unhesitatingly placed in that category of English painting of which the frank vision of Constable has furnished the most conspicuous and lovely examples, a category to which Gainsborough, Crome, Bonington and… David Cox also belong, one which can best be defined as displaying the fruits of an immediate unquestioning response to loved aspects of the visible world, furthermore a professional response, since it can be assumed that the sheer exercise of rendering it, whether rapidly or fluently, or with labour, is a preoccupation inseparable from the response itself, the impulse to paint, we may surmise being a component part of the delight experienced in the contemplation of nature; these artists are natural painters whose joy in appearances is unaffected. Such generalizations in the history and criticism of art are the more dangerous, being temptingly easy to make; for painting has flourished in 'schools' as music and literature have not. We must remember that the history of at least modern art is properly the history of artists; we may nevertheless speak of a category in this context, since it is possible to discover in the development of English painting two clear and divergent tendencies of which Constable naturally epitomizes the one and Blake as inevitably the other, the less pure and the more soulful. The poetry of Steer's vision is not only, however, simple to classify in this sense; it is perhaps the most complete instance in modern English painting of that coincidence of receptivity and skill which is the quality of the great natural, the great extravert painters." Good.
