Hardcover. First edition. 208pp. Octavo [22 cm] Orange paper covered boards with a white ink stamped title. Very good. The edges of the covers are mildly bumped and rubbed. The dust jacket is in very good condition. Lightly rubbed and soiled. There is a small 1 inch wide by 1/8 inch deep loss from the top edge of the front panel…. There are several chips in the top edge of the dust jacket as well. Herman Charles Bosman was a South African writer and journalist who became famous for capturing the rhythms of backveld Afrikaans speech although he wrote in English. He is widely viewed as the greatest short-story writer to come out of South Africa.

There is a…little browning to the page edges. Everything is sound and tight, with square unbumped corners. The contents are clean and bright with no ownership inscriptions or other markings of any kind. The dust jacket is unclipped (no flap price), but shows a little edgewear and rubbing, mainly to the top edges . It is now protected in a removable mylar cover. Herman Charles Bosman wrote his second novel Willemsdorp in 1951 after he had moved into a new home in Lombardy East in Johannesburg. The setting is Pietersburg in 1947-48. He had attempted to write a novel on city life but had ab…andoned it, thinking that he would do a better job on life in a small town. He wrote 145 pages and then abandoned the attempt, starting on a second version which is published here for the first time. In her biography of Bosman, Sunflower to the Sun, Valerie Rosenberg writes as follows about Willemsdorp: "As he wrote his second attempt, Pietersburg seemed to come alive. There are no obvious devices such as a description of a landscape, a resurrection of the koppie or the grass.One simply knows one is in Pietersburg and knows the way a hutcher's shop smells and sounds, even when it is closed and silent. (8.07 x 6.1 inch).WILLEMSDORP-ZUID HOLLAND-VIEWPCO-C45-14…BACKGROUND INFORMATIONFrom: 'Chateaux et Monumens des Pays Bas Faisant suite au Voyage pittoresque, dedie à S.A.R. la Princesse d'Orange.', by J.J. de Cloet, published in 34 installments / issues in Brussels from 1825-1830 by J.B.A. Jobard. This series contains 205 plates with views of cities, castles etc. in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands with comprised the Kingdom at the time. This series followed the succes of 'Vogage Pittoresque .', published in 1825. Plates by Madou, Kreins, De Pellaert, Pringret, General von der Howen, A. de Marbaix, Lemaitre. One also finds this series bound in 2 volumes, probably at a later date as the printing history of bound volumes is unclear and the plates probably only appeared in installments. At any rate the cost of the individual installments was 4,25 guilders for a total of 144,50 guilders, a fortune at the time. Condition: very good, given age. As usual with prints printed on this type of paper and age, some scattered foxing, which we can remove on request. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
