Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good+. No Jacket. First Edition. Pictorial red, black, and white cloth cover portraying menacing, devil-like clergy figures reaching out with claw-like hands to presumably-virtuous maiden figures; rear board features disembodied arm labeled "Fulton" wielding a dagger aimed at the book title imprinted in a shroud. Fulton (1828-1901) was a Baptist clergyman who was expelled from his last post in Brooklyn, New York, in 1879 (although he was later re-instated). He was vehemently anti- Roman Catholic. This book and others he wrote were published during a period of anti-Catholic hostility in the U.S. This volume was expurgated by Anthony Comstock prior to being printed (in 1873 "Comstock successfully influenced the United States Congress to pass the Comstock Law, which made illegal the delivery or transportation of both "obscene, lewd, or lascivious" material. . ."[from Wikipedia]). Thus, objectionable/censored material is blocked by black bars and other graphics throughout. Moderate rubbing to cover extremities. Light-to-moderate scuffing to boards. Small bump to upper rear board. Few small, light brownstains to front endpapers, one ofwhich "bleeds" onto margins of first several pages of text. Otherwise clean and tight.
