He was vehemently anti- Roman Catholic. This book and others he wrote were published during a period of anti-Catholic hostility in the U.S. This volume was expurgated by Anthony Comstock prior to being printed (in 1873 "Comstock successfully influenced the United States Congress to pass the Comstock Law, which made illegal the delivery or transportation of both "obscene, lewd, or lascivious" material. . ."[from Wikipedia]). Thus, objectionable/censored material is blocked by black bars and other graphics throughout. Lurid anti-Catholic engravings throughout. Unusual typography; Much material on the lascivious behavior of priests toward women.
