Add to basketRand Avery; 1888; 8vo. 339 pp.; Brown leather boards with gilt title to front and spine; Tissue covered frontispiece; Fulton (1828-1901) was a Baptist clergyman who was expelled from his last post in Brooklyn, New York, in 1879 (although he was later re-instated). He was vehemently anti- Roman Catholic. This book and others he wrote were published during a period of anti-Catholic hostility in the U.S. This volume was expurgated by Anthony Comstock prior to being printed (in 1873 "Comstock successfully influenced the United States Congress to pass the Comstock Law, which made illegal the delivery or transportation of both "obscene, lewd, or lascivious" material. . ."[from Wikipedia]). Thus, objectionable/censored material is blocked by black bars and other graphics throughout. Lurid anti-Catholic engravings throughout. Unusual typography; Much material on the lascivious behavior of priests toward women. Moderate rubbing to cover extremities; Bumped and rubbed corners and spine ends; Cracked hinges but Binding tight and intact; An unusual and striking book all around; Very Good+ $85.00.
