Knole House and the Sackville Family. 249 pages, including an Appendix of Brief Biographical Notes on Eminent Personages whose portraits are preserved at Knole + 22 page Picture Catalogue (corrected to May 1841). Fold-out genealogical chart. B&W frontispiece of Knole House + 26 other engravings… some as plates and some in the text or at start of each chapter. Covers: the family, house, chapel, rooms open to visitors and their contents including pictures, and the park. Contains an account of the brutal and fatal rapier and dagger duel in 1613 between Edward Sackville, 4th Earl of Dorset and Lord Bruce. The Book is Dedicated (extracts) "To The Right Honourable Mary, Countess-Dowager of Plymouth" " descriptive of her Ladyship's residence Knole House" "Family of Sackville, her Ladyship's paternal ancestors". The book is dated 1839 but, the Picture Catalogue is "corrected to May, 1841". Came from a local history archive that sold books outside of its area when moving to smaller premises. Original cloth boards, have gilt lettering to spine, but are grubby and most of the spine is detached (and placed inside) . Has a white-ink library ref.no. written towards the base of the spine. The front & back of the title page, plates, frontispiece, last (index) page, and the fold-out have library stamps. The inside of the front board has a library bookplate with a library bar-code stuck on it. The contents are clean and tight, with only minor foxing.
