Contact seller5-star sellerFirst Edition. Lowry, Robert. The Violent Wedding, 1953, centers on a Black prizefighter and the white woman who loves him, placing interracial intimacy within the commercial paperback fiction of the early 1950s. The subject carried direct legal and social consequences in a United States where state prohibitions on interracial m…arriage remained enforceable until the Supreme Court invalidated such laws in Loving v. Virginia in 1967. Lowry's treatment of boxing, race, and sexual relationships also belongs to the fiction he produced after World War II, when his work drew on military experience and Greenwich Village life. Contemporary records identify The Violent Wedding among his published novels of this period. Lowry, Robert. The Violent Wedding. New York: Popular Library, 1953. First edition, first printing. 127 pages. Mass market paperback in pictorial wrappers. Measures 4.25 x 7 inches. The front cover shows a blonde white woman sprawled across a bed while a Black man in a coat watches from the doorway, placing interracial sexual tension at the center of the book's commercial presentation. The accompanying tagline reads, "A fast-moving, brutally frank novel." The fore edge is tinted green. Lowry had served in the U.S. military during World War II and later published fiction concerning wartime experience and Greenwich Village during the emergence of the Beat scene. Biographical accounts further record that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1952 and underwent electroconvulsive therapy, after which psychiatric hospitalization repeatedly interrupted his life and career. The Violent Wedding therefore appeared at a late point in Lowry's most active commercial publishing period, while its interracial plot placed race and intimate relationships before a mass paperback readership fourteen years before Loving v. Virginia. Green-tinted fore edge; very good condition. The first printing retains Popular Library's original racialized cover imagery and "brutally frank" marketing of the novel's interracial relationship.

Pappe. Condition: gut. Erste Aufl. Fadengehefteter, fotografisch gestalteter Pappband mit Lesebändchen. Die Einbandkanten leicht berieben, ansonsten guter Zustand. Der Schriftsteller Robert Lowry (* 29. März 1919 in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; ? 5.
