Antiquarian ink inscription "James McCallum - 1859" on front free endpaper's upper center; old ink blot at frontispiece's fore-edge margin affecting preceding flyleaf and successive tissue guard and title page; a few creased page corners; foxing/toning strongest on book's unpaged b/w plates and their adjacent leaves. Binding is firm. Provenance from a multi-generational collection of books acquired from a Tupelo, Mississippi estate with the family having Pulaski, Tennessee roots. Thus the book's aforementioned ownership signature allows for a firm attribution to James M. McCallum (1806-1889), an early Giles County, Tennessee attorney, state legislator, and author. McCallum served as Clerk and Master of the Giles County Chancery Court from 1842-1861 thereafter representing Giles County in the Tennessee General Assembly from 1861-1863 and representing Tennessee in the Confederate Congress from 1864-1865.
